Lowndes County deputies arrest two in Greentree Drive drive-by shooting
Lowndes County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two people after a drive-by shooting at Greentree Apartments on Greentree Drive on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies responded at about 1 p.m. and detectives determined about 12 rounds were fired from an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle. Investigators recovered 12 spent shell casings at the scene and said the suspects fled in a black Dodge Challenger.
Investigators arrested 18-year-old Jacory Smart on July 7 and, after consultation with the district attorney’s office, charged him July 8 with attempted murder, the sheriff’s office said. A 16-year-old juvenile was also arrested July 7 and was later charged as an adult under Mississippi Senate Bill 2710, which allows certain juveniles accused of violent crimes involving a firearm to be prosecuted in adult court.
Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said the case should remind parents and guardians to discuss the consequences of carrying or using firearms during violent crimes. The sheriff’s office said it believes this is the first case in Lowndes County in which a juvenile has been charged as an adult under the new law.
The investigation remains active and additional charges or arrests may follow, the sheriff’s office said.
