Jackson police urge safety for Facebook Marketplace meetups
The Jackson Police Department urged residents to take precautions when meeting buyers or sellers from Facebook Marketplace, saying they should meet in well-lit public places or at JPD locations open to the public, according to a Facebook post.
Officials advised people never to meet alone, to keep conversations on the platform and to inspect items before any money changes hands, the department said.
The department warned of common red flags, including requests for gift card payments, demands for upfront deposits and anyone who refuses to meet in person. “If something feels wrong, cancel the transaction and report it,” the post said.
To report a scam, call the Jackson Police Department non-emergency line at (601) 960-1800. For emergencies, callers should always dial 9-1-1. The department said it remains committed to keeping the community safe online and in person.
Facebook Marketplace is an online classifieds feature that connects local buyers and sellers; users should take basic precautions when arranging in-person exchanges. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
