The Jackson Police Department said on its Facebook page it will join other local law enforcement agencies to honor Mr. Sylvester Candler, whom the department called a “JPD Police Training Academy legend,” on his 89th birthday.
Police training academies provide basic instruction and ongoing training for recruits and officers, and veteran instructors and alumni often play influential roles in shaping departmental practices and culture. Honoring a longtime figure at an academy recognizes contributions to officer development and public safety.
The department’s post included a flyer with event details. It did not provide additional information in the post, but the participation of multiple agencies suggests broad local recognition of Candler’s impact within the law enforcement community.
