Hinds County Sheriff strengthens inmate highway cleanup partnership

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday it has strengthened an inmate litter pickup partnership with the city of Jackson, the Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Mississippi Department of Corrections to keep highways in Hinds County clean.

The office said in a Facebook post that it joined Mayor John Hohrn and Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons for a $1 transfer of a pickup truck from the commissioner’s office to HCSO to support the renewed cleanup effort.

The post thanked MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain for his continued partnership and for allowing state inmates to participate in the work program. Inmate litter pickup programs typically assign supervised inmates to collect trash along roadways in cooperation with local and state agencies.

Officials said they look forward to reigniting the initiative and keeping Mississippi roadsides attractive. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
