Facebook reel urges Oxford, Ole Miss students to secure homes for summer

A Facebook reel aimed at Oxford residents and University of Mississippi students urged people to secure their homes before leaving for summer break, saying, “Lock your doors, secure your windows, and close your curtains before heading out.”

The short post noted many University of Mississippi — commonly known as Ole Miss — students are about to leave town and that local residents may have vacations planned. It added that “a few simple steps can make a big difference.”

Vacant houses can attract unwanted attention, and community safety groups and law enforcement agencies often recommend basic precautions such as locking doors, securing windows and asking a neighbor to watch the property while you are away. The University of Mississippi enrolls thousands of students who leave campus for the summer, increasing the number of temporarily unoccupied homes in Oxford.

Residents should consider routine measures such as setting alarms, using timers for lights and notifying trusted neighbors of travel plans to reduce risk. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
