Deputies arrest West Point man on methamphetamine charge

Deputies arrested a West Point man on June 13 after discovering suspected methamphetamine during a traffic-related stop in the Mooreville area of Lee County, Sheriff Jim H. Johnson said in a Facebook post.

The sheriff identified the suspect as Joe W. Guines, 61, of West Point, Mississippi. Deputies initially responded to a call for service and made contact with Guines; during the course of the investigation he was arrested on a traffic-related violation and was additionally charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (methamphetamine), the post said.

A Justice Court judge set Guines’ bond at $5,000, according to the sheriff’s post. The sheriff’s office did not provide additional details about the traffic violation or the quantity of the suspected drug.

Methamphetamine is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance under federal law and many state statutes, a designation that indicates a high potential for abuse and limited accepted medical uses. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
