Adams County remembers retired K-9 Barry

ADAMS COUNTY — The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of retired K-9 Barry, the agency said. Barry was the first dual-purpose K-9 purchased under the current administration and served alongside his handler, Sgt. Thomas McGinty.

The sheriff’s office said Barry assisted in numerous operations during his service, including the recovery of missing persons, the apprehension of fugitives and the seizure of illegal narcotics.

“Today, we mourn not just the loss of a K-9, but the loss of a faithful partner and member of our law enforcement family,” the agency said.

After Barry’s retirement, McGinty continued to care for him, the sheriff’s office said, and the department thanked Barry for his years of dedicated service to Adams County. The office asked the community to keep McGinty and everyone who loved Barry in their thoughts and prayers.

Police K-9s commonly support public safety by tracking people, detecting narcotics and assisting officers in patrol duties. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
