UMMC honors Dr. Lyle Zardiackas with endowed professorship, named lab

The University of Mississippi Medical Center said in a Facebook post that gifts from one of the medical center’s most influential researchers have established an endowed professorship and named a laboratory in his honor.

UMMC said the move recognizes the legacy of Dr. Lyle Zardiackas, whose work helped establish biomedical materials science in Mississippi decades ago. The university posted a link to a fuller account on its website.

Biomedical materials science examines materials used in medical devices, implants and tissue engineering, and plays a central role in translational research that moves laboratory discoveries into clinical care. Endowed professorships and named laboratories typically provide sustained support for research, faculty recruitment and student training.

The recognition at UMMC underscores ongoing institutional efforts to preserve and build on long-standing research programs that benefit patient care and medical education in the state. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
