Meridian urges families to discuss youth vaping and tobacco use

As the new school year begins, the City of Meridian is urging families to talk with young people about vaping, nicotine and tobacco. The city said the start of school can bring new pressures, including pressure related to tobacco and vaping.

National youth tobacco data cited by the city found that 9.5% of high school students and 4.1% of middle school students reported currently using tobacco products. E-cigarettes were among the most common products reported.

The city encouraged parents and guardians to learn what children are seeing and hearing from friends and to remind them that one decision can quickly become a habit.

Families seeking help can contact the Mississippi Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW, or 1-800-784-8669. The service offers free information, coaching and support.

The city said helping young people make healthy choices is part of building a healthier Meridian.
