CMS launches nationwide audit of Medicaid providers

Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Dr. Mehmet Oz announced this week that CMS is launching a nationwide audit of Medicaid providers.

CMS administers Medicare and works with states to run the Medicaid program, which provides health coverage to low-income individuals and families. Medicaid is jointly funded by the federal government and states and represents a major portion of public health spending in the United States.

Audits of Medicaid providers generally aim to detect improper payments, ensure compliance with program rules and protect federal and state funds. A nationwide review on this scale signals heightened federal oversight and could lead to increased scrutiny of billing practices, documentation and eligibility determinations.

The announcement arrives amid ongoing national debate over health care spending, program integrity and access to services. Providers and state Medicaid agencies may face additional administrative work as they respond to requests for records and other information.

Details on the scope, timing and specific targets of the audit were not immediately available. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
