Officials warn after nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak
Health officials are urging caution when handling fresh produce after a nationwide outbreak of cyclosporiasis, with confirmed cases reported in Mississippi, authorities said. University of Mississippi Medical Center experts are sharing information on what causes the illness, the symptoms to watch for and steps people can take to reduce their risk.
Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis that is typically spread by ingesting food or water contaminated with the organism. Common symptoms include prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and fatigue; symptoms often begin days after exposure.
Public health officials recommend careful handling of fresh fruits and vegetables to reduce the chance of infection. General precautions include washing hands thoroughly with soap and water before preparing or eating produce, rinsing produce under running water, and following any local recalls or advisories. People who become ill should contact a health care provider for evaluation.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center is providing guidance as investigators monitor the outbreak. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
