Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam
The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office said several residents have received phone calls from an individual claiming to be an officer and demanding payment to avoid arrest. The office said the calls assert the recipient has a warrant and instructs them to pay or face arrest.
The sheriff’s office said the calls are a scam and warned that callers may make the phone number appear as the office’s actual number and may use the name of an actual deputy. “No one from the Sheriff’s Office will ever call and attempt to collect money,” the office said in a Facebook post.
Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office is the local law enforcement agency responsible for public safety and law enforcement in the county. The warning underscores a common fraud tactic in which scammers impersonate authorities to create urgency and extract payments from victims.
Officials advised residents to hang up immediately if they receive a similar call and to verify any law enforcement contact by using known, official phone numbers or by contacting the sheriff’s office directly. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
