Ashley Castle received a successful liver transplant at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, giving her a second chance after years of cancer treatment and multiple incompatible transplant offers, UMMC said. The procedure is believed to be a first for Mississippi, according to the medical center.
UMMC said Castle’s journey included years of treatment, prolonged uncertainty and several potential transplant opportunities that ultimately were not the right match. The recent operation provided the lifesaving organ match she needed.
Liver transplantation is a major, complex surgery that can restore health for patients with severe liver disease or organ failure. Transplants involve coordination among surgical teams, organ procurement organizations and long-term follow-up care to monitor for rejection and manage recovery.
