Pike County sheriff issues weekend safety message

Pike County Sheriff Bryant “Wally” Jones urged residents to make safety a priority during the weekend, whether traveling, attending community or sporting events, spending time with family and friends, or staying home.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office advised motorists and passengers to buckle up, avoid driving after drinking by designating a sober driver or making other arrangements, and put away their phones while driving. The message also urged drivers to slow down and use extra caution at night, particularly on rural roads.

People attending sporting events were asked to watch for children, follow parking and traffic directions, and show respect for players, coaches, officials and fellow spectators. Residents were also encouraged to secure their homes, vehicles and valuables before leaving, remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity.

The sheriff’s office also reminded adults to keep an eye on children and young people and know where they are. Jones said community safety depends on citizens and law enforcement working together and urged residents to look out for one another.
