Gulfport police to participate in national railroad safety enforcement effort

The Gulfport Police Department will join Operation Lifesaver Inc., the Amtrak Police Department and hundreds of other law enforcement agencies for Operation Clear Track, a national effort to raise awareness of and enforce railroad grade crossing and trespassing laws.

The initiative is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 22, during See Tracks? Think Train Week, which runs Sept. 21-27. Participating law enforcement personnel will share rail safety information at targeted railroad grade crossings, transit stations and other locations.

Organizers say the goal of the week and Operation Clear Track is to reduce pedestrian and driver injuries and fatalities around railroad tracks through increased public awareness.
