Heat advisory and burn ban remain in effect in Lafayette County

A Heat Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. as Ole Miss prepares to play LSU in Oxford, where conditions are expected to feel like 100 degrees during the afternoon. Temperatures are forecast to peak around 98 degrees at about 4 p.m., when FanFest, the Walk of Champions and stadium gate lines get underway.

At the 6:30 p.m. kickoff, temperatures are expected to be about 95 degrees under clear skies. Conditions should remain near 80 degrees at 10 p.m. after the game. No storms are expected, so there is no anticipated lightning-delay concern.

The National Weather Service advises people to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors. People are also urged to watch for heat-illness symptoms including dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea or confusion. Anyone experiencing those symptoms should move to shade or air conditioning and seek help if they do not ease.

Lafayette County’s burn ban remains active as of Saturday, September 19. The ban prohibits campfires, bonfires, fire pits, fire rings and burn barrels in the Grove, on the Square and in any lot.
