Toppers open SSAC play with 7-4 win over Point

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Mississippi — Blue Mountain Christian University opened Southern States Athletic Conference play with a 7-4 victory over Point University on Friday at the BMCU Sportsplex.

A passed ball with two runners aboard produced the game’s first run in the first inning, and BMCU extended the lead with runs in the second and third. Jake Meilstrup’s RBI double plated Yaidel Perez in the second, and Perez drove in another run in the third.

Blue Mountain added a run on Reise Thomas’ sacrifice fly in the fifth. Point scored two in the sixth, but Jarret Morris answered with an RBI single to restore a multi-run margin. Morris delivered again in the seventh with a two-RBI hit that drove in Ross Polizzi and Jacob Bryant.

Chip Harris started on the mound and was backed by Jesse Hancock in relief as the Toppers limited late threats. Offensively, Cody Presley had three hits and BMCU finished with 10 hits. The teams meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second game of the series.
