Southern Miss volleyball falls to Memphis in straight sets

Southern Miss lost to Memphis 3-0 in volleyball Thursday night at Elma Roane Fieldhouse in Memphis, with the Tigers winning 25-19, 25-21 and 25-21. The Golden Eagles entered the match with an 8-2 record, while Memphis was 4-6.

Sadie McAda led Southern Miss with a match-high 17 kills. Diana Wells added eight kills, and Elly Stewart recorded five kills and two service aces. Allie Hazelwood finished with 34 assists and five digs, while Sunni Sheppard contributed 13 digs.

Southern Miss took an early 1-0 lead in the opening set before Memphis used a 5-0 run to move ahead. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 10-9 and later pulled within five points, but Memphis closed the set 25-19.

The Golden Eagles led 6-4 in the second set after Emily Davis recorded the first service ace of her career. Southern Miss later used a 4-0 run, including a Kaylee Lowther ace, to take a 17-16 lead. Memphis regained control and scored the final three points for a 25-21 win.

Memphis opened the third set with a 5-1 advantage, but Southern Miss rallied to tie the score at 5-5. The Golden Eagles led 14-13 after back-to-back Stewart aces and stayed close through several ties before Memphis scored the final four points to win the set and the match.

Southern Miss returns to action Friday at the Rumble at the Roan against Little Rock at 4 p.m. CT in Memphis.
