U.S. Coast Guard celebrates 236th birthday
The U.S. Coast Guard marked its 236th birthday on Tuesday, highlighting its dual role as a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and a federally authorized maritime law enforcement agency, according to a Facebook post recognizing the day.
The service traces its origins to the Revenue Cutter Service, created in 1790 to enforce customs laws and protect American waterways. Over more than two centuries the Coast Guard has expanded its missions to include search and rescue, environmental protection, port security and maritime law enforcement.
The Coast Guard plays a central role in combating illegal drug trafficking, safeguarding commerce and saving lives at sea. Its responsibilities include patrolling coastal waters, inspecting vessels, responding to disasters and coordinating maritime safety operations.
