Mississippi under extreme heat warning; heat index may reach 110–115

All of Mississippi is under an Extreme Heat Warning or heat advisory Thursday, July 28, 2026, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said, warning that heat index values could reach 110–115 degrees, increasing the likelihood of heat-related illnesses for people spending extended time outdoors.

The agency advised residents to drink plenty of water even if they do not feel thirsty, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. It also urged limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

MEMA warned never to leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, saying temperatures inside a car can become deadly within minutes. The agency also urged pet owners to bring animals indoors when possible, provide fresh water and shade, and walk dogs early or late to avoid hot pavement.

Health officials say high heat increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for older adults, young children and outdoor workers. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
