Mississippi Highway Patrol increases enforcement for Memorial Day travel
JACKSON — The Mississippi Highway Patrol will increase enforcement during the Memorial Day holiday travel period, the agency said Friday.
The enforcement campaign begins at 6 p.m. Friday, May 22, and ends at midnight Monday, May 25. Troopers said the effort coincides with the national Click It or Ticket seatbelt enforcement campaign and will emphasize Mississippi’s occupant restraint laws as well as speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving violations. Safety checkpoints will be used throughout the weekend.
“As we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives for our country this Memorial Day, let’s also do our part to protect the lives around us,” Commissioner Sean Tindell said. “If you’re traveling this weekend, buckle up, slow down, and never drive impaired. One safe decision can save a life.”
The patrol noted that during the 2025 Memorial Day travel period it investigated 137 crashes on state and federal highways, including six fatalities. Troopers also made 73 DUI arrests and issued 592 citations for occupant restraint violations. Click It or Ticket is a national campaign aimed at increasing seatbelt use through targeted enforcement and public education.
