FEMA warns Mississippi survivors of $150 disaster-assistance scam

JACKSON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency is warning Mississippi disaster survivors about scammers requesting a $150 payment to complete applications for disaster assistance, FEMA said.

FEMA said it does not charge anyone to apply for disaster assistance and urged residents not to send money or share personal information with anyone who says payment is required.

Officials said FEMA staff always carry official photo identification and residents should confirm they are speaking with an agency employee before providing any information. FEMA said it works with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Justice to protect disaster assistance and investigate fraud.

Anyone who suspects fraud can call the Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-720-5721 or visit fema.gov/disaster-fraud for more information. Scammers often target survivors after emergencies, exploiting confusion and urgency to demand payments or personal data, which can delay legitimate help.

Survivors should use FEMA’s official website and verified contact numbers when seeking assistance and be wary of unsolicited offers. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
