American, Allied forces storm Normandy beaches; Mississippi remembers
A Facebook post marking the anniversary said, “82 years ago, American and Allied heroes stormed the beaches of Normandy and changed the course of history. Mississippi will never forget.”
The post referred to the Allied landings on the coast of Normandy that brought U.S. and other Allied troops ashore in an operation that is widely regarded as a turning point in World War II.
Historians say the Normandy landings set the stage for the liberation of Nazi-occupied Western Europe and reshaped the war’s course. Veterans groups, historians and communities across the United States regularly mark the anniversary as a time to remember those who served and those who died.
Mississippi’s expression of remembrance reflects a broader tradition of annual observances honoring veterans and the sacrifices of Allied forces. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
