America250 seals national time capsule until 2276

America250 said it sealed a national time capsule that will remain closed until 2276, a move organizers describe as a way to preserve contemporary artifacts for future generations.

A social media post from Mississippi celebrated the project, saying, “Mississippi will see you in 2276! Everything that’s inside ‘America’s Time Capsule.'” Organizers said contributions came from across the country to represent a snapshot of American life today.

America250 is the nonprofit group coordinating activities around the U.S. semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding, and has led initiatives to mark the milestone. Time capsules are a common commemorative tool intended to give people centuries hence a direct view of the present.

The year 2276 will mark the 500th anniversary of 1776, the year the Declaration of Independence was adopted, which adds symbolic weight to the planned reopening. Details about specific items placed in the capsule were limited at the time of the announcement. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
