Pinkins criticizes Wicker votes on FEMA funding
Oct. 7, 2024 – Ty Pinkins, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate criticized incumbent Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today for votes against FEMA funding, including a significant vote in 2021 that left Mississippi families at risk during crises.
Pinkins highlighted the severe consequences of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the tornado that devastated his hometown of Rolling Fork in 2023, and the recent destruction caused by Hurricane Helena in other states, emphasizing the crucial need for disaster relief funding.
“In 2021, Sen. Wicker voted against FEMA funding, failing to safeguard Mississippi families during their most vulnerable times. Wicker’s vote reflects a pattern of neglect that dates to his failure to advocate for resources following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, one of the most catastrophic storms in Mississippi’s history,” Pinkins stated.
“Just last year, Rolling Fork—my hometown—was ravaged by a tornado that flattened the area. Families lost everything, and without FEMA, they would have had no route to recovery. Although Hurricane Helena didn’t strike Mississippi, it has caused major damage in other states, underscoring the essential role FEMA plays in assisting families to rebuild after natural disasters.” Pinkins continued.
As Hurricane Helena caused destruction across other states in 2024, the necessity for strong federal disaster relief remains critical for Mississippi, which is among the most disaster-prone states in the nation. Whether facing hurricanes, tornadoes, or floods, Pinkins feels that the residents of Mississippi depend on FEMA to aid them in recovering and rebuilding after nature’s harshest challenges.
Pinkins says he understands the devastating impact of natural disasters on communities. He has witnessed how federal assistance can provide essential support for recovery and pledges to advocate for Mississippi families in the Senate.
“In the U.S. Senate, I will ensure that when Mississippi families are in need, they receive the support and resources they deserve,” Pinkins said. “It’s time we had a Senator who fights for the people, not for political maneuvers.”
