Vicksburg police captain Penny Jones retires after barrier-breaking service
VICKSBURG, Miss. — Captain Penny Jones, who made history as the first female chief of the Vicksburg Police Department, is retiring after years of service, the department said in a Facebook post.
The department said Jones served as chief and continued her leadership as captain, and that her tenure broke barriers for women in law enforcement. The post praised her leadership, strength and commitment to the community, and said her influence extends to officers she mentored and residents she served.
Vicksburg is a city on the Mississippi River and the county seat of Warren County. The Vicksburg Police Department handles local law enforcement duties for the city, and department leaders said Jones’ career helped pave the way for future generations of women in policing.
The department thanked Jones for her years of service and wished her a well-deserved retirement. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
