Tornado warning for DeSoto County expires

A tornado warning for DeSoto County, Mississippi, that had been in effect until 9:15 p.m. CDT has expired, a Facebook post said.

DeSoto County is in northwestern Mississippi and is part of the greater Memphis metropolitan area. Tornado warnings in this region can affect populated suburbs and rural communities alike, prompting rapid sheltering and emergency response.

Tornado warnings are issued by the National Weather Service when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar and mean there is imminent danger to life and property. Weather officials typically urge people in warned areas to move to a small, windowless interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building or to cover themselves with a mattress or heavy blankets if sheltering in place.

Residents in DeSoto County should continue to monitor local media, NOAA weather radio and official county accounts for any follow-up statements, watches or warnings and for information on damage and road conditions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
