Three Mississippi towns rank among most envied places for middle-class life
TUPELO, Mississippi — Three Mississippi communities are drawing national attention as places where residents say the middle-class lifestyle still feels within reach, according to a new survey by Calgary Homes.
The study, based on responses from more than 3,000 people, ranked cities across the country where Americans believe they can achieve a balance of affordability, community and quality of life. While no Mississippi city made the top 10, Tupelo ranked No. 49 nationwide, followed by Oxford at No. 82 and Madison at No. 97.
Respondents pointed to Tupelo’s sense of community and investment in local amenities, including a revitalized downtown, parks and schools. Tupelo is best known as the birthplace of Elvis Presley.
Oxford, home to the University of Mississippi, drew praise for its blend of culture and tradition and for the walkable town square. Madison, a suburb north of Jackson, was noted for its schools, low crime rate and family-oriented neighborhoods.
Nationally, Colorado Springs topped the list, followed by St. Augustine, Florida, and Hilo, Hawaii. A Calgary Homes spokesperson said the findings reflect a shift in what Americans value. “For most people, the idea of ‘making it’ hasn’t disappeared, it’s just evolved,” the spokesperson said. “The most envied places aren’t about excess or status, but about balance: strong communities, access to nature and a lifestyle that feels attainable.”
