Suspect arrested after overnight burglaries in Columbus
COLUMBUS, Mississippi — A man was arrested after a series of overnight burglaries and attempted burglaries early Aug. 11, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
Deputies identified the suspect as Jeremiah Orr and said surveillance footage showed him inside a red Mercedes and attempting to gain entry into a residence in the 200 block of Molly Loop at about 1 a.m. A second burglary occurred about 2 a.m. in the 300 block of Molly Loop, where a mother and her four children were inside, the sheriff’s office said.
The office said Orr was seen going through a purse inside the home before fleeing and knocking over items. Later that morning, deputies said surveillance captured him attempting to break into a 2016 Ford Explorer at about 4:56 a.m. and trying to enter a residence at the William Roberts Apartments on William Roberts Road around 4:58 a.m.
Deputies located and detained a man matching witness descriptions, and investigators said surveillance footage and other evidence tied him to the vehicle and residential entries. The sheriff’s office said Orr was arrested and charged with one count of home burglary, one count of auto burglary and five counts of attempted burglary. He remains in custody at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center; no bond had been set.
The sheriff’s office urged residents to secure vehicles and homes and to report suspicious activity by calling 911. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
