Sheriff Bailey and deputies assigned as school resource officers with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department attended a presentation by national school safety advocate Max Schachter at MS Christian University in Clinton, the department said.
Schachter, who speaks nationally on school safety, lost his son Alex in the Parkland school shooting on Feb. 14, 2018, in which 17 people were killed, the department said.
The presentation focused on the importance of vigilance by faculty and staff and on the partnerships that help keep communities and schools safe, the department said. School resource officers are law enforcement personnel assigned to schools to provide security and build relationships with students and staff, and training events like this are intended to strengthen those roles.
The Rankin County School District sponsored the event, the department said. The training underscores local efforts to enhance school safety through collaboration between law enforcement and educators. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
