Severe storms threaten areas west of I-55

A severe weather alert warns that “Severe storms capable of damaging wind gusts and hail are possible this evening west of I-55,” the alert said.

Damaging winds can topple trees and snap power lines, while hail can dent vehicles, shatter windows and damage roofs and crops. Such storms can also produce dangerous lightning and sudden heavy rainfall that reduces visibility and increases the risk of flash flooding.

Officials typically advise people in the affected area to seek shelter indoors away from windows, secure loose outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary travel and keep pets inside. Residents should monitor local news outlets, official social media channels and NOAA Weather Radio for updates and any emergency instructions.

Interstate 55 is a major north-south highway used as a reference point in weather alerts across the central United States. Severe thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer months in many parts of the country, making timely alerts important for public safety.
