Severe storms threaten parts of Mississippi
Weather officials said April 28, 2026, that parts of Mississippi are under an Enhanced Risk — level 3 of 5 — for severe storms expected that day, with damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail up to golf-ball size and possible tornadoes. Officials added that a strong tornado cannot be ruled out.
The Enhanced Risk classification is part of a five-tier outlook used by national forecasting agencies to convey an elevated chance of organized severe storms. Level 3 indicates a greater likelihood of widespread damaging winds, large hail or tornadoes than lower levels of risk.
Officials said residents should stay weather-aware throughout the day, have multiple ways to receive warnings and know their safe place in case warnings are issued. General preparedness steps include identifying interior shelter areas, keeping a charged phone and having emergency supplies on hand.
Severe storms can threaten life, property and travel. People in the affected areas should monitor local forecasts and heed any watches or warnings issued by authorities. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
