Police warn airsoft guns prompt dangerous misunderstandings

A local police department said it responded to two separate incidents over the past week involving high school-aged students carrying airsoft guns that closely resembled real firearms, including one incident at a gas station today, the department said in a Facebook post.

The post said several citizens intervened in the gas station incident, spoke with the young people involved, offered life advice and helped de-escalate the situation before it became more serious.

The department warned that many modern airsoft and imitation firearms are designed to look nearly identical to real weapons and that some people remove or paint the orange safety tip to make them appear more realistic.

It said responding officers and concerned citizens often have only seconds to make decisions based on the information available, and urged parents to talk with their children, know what they are carrying and encourage good decision-making.

The department asked parents to inspect any airsoft weapons to ensure they do not look like real firearms and said a single poor decision can have life-altering consequences. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
