Tupelo police warn about realistic-looking toy guns

Tupelo — The Tupelo Police Department is warning parents and guardians after receiving complaints about toy guns being used in neighborhoods, the department said. Complaints involve “Orby guns,” gel blasters, splatter guns and similar toy weapons that residents say are being used in local streets and yards, the department said.

Police said many of the toys can look realistic and may be mistaken for real firearms, particularly from a distance or at night. The department said situations involving realistic-looking guns can quickly create dangerous misunderstandings for residents and for responding law enforcement officers.

Officials asked parents and guardians to talk with children about using the toys responsibly and not to point or shoot them at strangers, passing vehicles, homes or anyone who may not know they are toys. The department said it appreciates the public’s help in keeping these situations from escalating into something more serious.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
