Oxford police outline exit plan after fireworks

Oxford police are urging motorists and pedestrians to be patient and follow officer directions after a fireworks display, saying traffic will be heavy and safety is the priority.

The Oxford Police Department said in a Facebook post that drivers should follow officers’ hand signals even if those signals conflict with posted signs, give officers room to work and stay alert to their directions. The department also reminded the public to watch for pedestrians and noted that “extra minutes now = everyone home safe,” language used in the post.

Oxford police serve the city of Oxford, Mississippi, a community that hosts public events and displays that can draw large crowds and create traffic congestion. Police-directed traffic control aims to reduce collisions and protect pedestrians and officers working on scene; following directions helps emergency personnel manage flow and reduce delays.

The post included hashtags #OxfordMS and #OxfordPD and thanked residents for helping keep officers safe. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
