Oxford officer reads to children at Square Books Jr
Officer Wilkerson spent part of his morning reading to a room full of children at Square Books Jr., the Oxford Police Department said in a Facebook post. The department thanked the bookstore for the invitation and said community interaction, even for events such as story time, is one of the job’s favorite parts.
The appearance is an example of community policing efforts in Oxford, a city in northern Mississippi that regularly hosts events aimed at strengthening ties between residents and law enforcement. Police participation in nonenforcement activities can help build trust with young people and familiarize families with officers in a low-pressure setting.
Square Books Jr. is a local children’s bookstore and community gathering spot that frequently hosts readings and family events. Such programs give children opportunities to meet public servants outside of emergency situations and allow officers to engage with residents in informal settings.
Details about how often the department plans similar visits were not provided. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
