Mississippi vows never to forget service members

A Facebook post declared, “Mississippi will never forget,” and thanked the state’s service members who were wounded or lost their lives while serving the nation, saying the state honors their selfless sacrifice “today and every day,” the post said.

The message, posted on a Mississippi-based social media page, echoed a long-standing practice in the state and across the country of publicly recognizing military service and sacrifice. State and local governments, veterans organizations and community groups often mount ceremonies, maintain memorials and offer support programs for veterans and their families.

Honoring wounded and fallen service members carries social and political significance for many communities in Mississippi, where military service and veteran affairs are prominent elements of public life. Observances serve to remember individual sacrifices and to underscore ongoing commitments to veterans’ health care, benefits and family support.
