Mississippi opens hand-grabbing season for catfish anglers

JACKSON — Mississippi opened its hand-grabbing season for catfish anglers on May 1, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks said. The season runs through July 15, the department said.

Hand-grabbing, sometimes called noodling, involves reaching into underwater holes to catch catfish by hand. The practice is considered one of Mississippi’s more unusual fishing traditions, and the department said the state is one of the few with a dedicated season for it.

MDWFP said some of the largest blue and flathead catfish taken in Mississippi each year are landed during hand-grabbing season. The department encouraged interested anglers to review regulations and season information before heading out and to make sure they understand any local rules that apply.
