Man shot at Monroe County field party; deputies make arrests
MONROE COUNTY, Mississippi — A 44-year-old man was shot Saturday night during a large gathering on Jakobi Lane near Shepherd Drive and Highway 45 Alternate, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.
Monroe County 911 dispatch received a call about 10 p.m. reporting weapons being pulled and shots fired at the field party, the sheriff’s office said. While deputies were en route, a caller reported that someone had been shot.
Deputies initially could not enter the area because of heavy traffic leaving the scene, the sheriff’s office said. When officers gained access, they found the victim alive with a gunshot wound to the upper torso.
The sheriff’s office said deputies arrested multiple people at the scene for interfering with efforts to render aid to the victim. Emergency responders with MedStat transported the victim to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo; his condition has not been released.
Investigators said no one at the scene was willing to provide information about who fired the shots or what led to the violence. Sheriff Kevin Crook is asking anyone with information to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 662-369-2468. Tipsters can remain anonymous by contacting Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
Field parties that draw large crowds can present safety challenges and prompt law enforcement responses, particularly in rural areas. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
