JPD announces PAL tryouts

JPD said in a Facebook post that it is announcing tryouts for the Police Athletic League, or PAL, and urged community members to consider joining or supporting the program.

The department said PAL offers more than basketball, providing life skills, leadership development and mentorship in addition to athletic instruction. JPD said the program’s goal is to reduce juvenile crime and violence by creating opportunities for law enforcement officers and youth to build positive connections through sports and other physical activities.

The post noted PAL has proven effective in forging relationships between police officers and community members. Police Athletic League programs nationwide commonly pair officers with young people through sports and recreation to foster trust, mentorship and alternatives to delinquent behavior.

Those who want to support JPD’s PAL program may contact Captain Christian Vance at 601-960-1378, the post said. “We’re looking forward to an exciting season!” JPD added. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
