A recent police academy graduate told staff at JPD headquarters that he made his first arrest after observing an individual carrying a concealed weapon, the department said on Facebook.
The department said the graduate was walking with his field training officer when both wore broad smiles and appeared jubilant. The new officer told the staff member, “I just made my first arrest. I was the one who initiated it after observing an individual carrying a concealed weapon,” according to the Facebook post.
JPD said the encounter reflected the officers’ enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment to serving the community. The person who posted on the department’s page said they asked to take a photo to share the milestone publicly and to recognize the officers’ dedication.
Field training officers, often called FTOs, supervise and mentor recent academy graduates during their initial months on patrol, a practice many departments use to reinforce training and on-the-job judgment. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
