Hinds County deputies teach gun safety to 2nd graders

Hinds County Sheriff’s Office school resource officers engaged second-graders last week at Gary Road Elementary School for “Gun safety with Eddie Eagle,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office is the primary law enforcement agency for Hinds County, Mississippi, and its school resource officers are assigned to local schools to provide safety, support and community policing, the office says.

The Eddie Eagle program is a national gun-safety initiative aimed at young children that teaches them to avoid firearms and tell a trusted adult if they find one. Schools and law enforcement agencies across the country often use the program as part of broader safety and prevention efforts.

Officials say such classroom visits aim to give students age-appropriate safety information and to strengthen ties between students and officers. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
