Hattiesburg Police Receive Special Olympics Torch

Hattiesburg police received the Special Olympics torch from the Petal Police Department at Hattiesburg City Hall, the Hattiesburg Police Department said in a Facebook post. The handoff was part of a relay to kick off the Special Olympics Mississippi 2026 Summer Games, scheduled for May 22-24 in Hammond, Louisiana.

The department said law enforcement agencies across the state are helping keep the flame moving in support of Special Olympics athletes. The post said Hattiesburg officers served as “Guardians of the Flame” to carry the tradition forward for the athletes.

Special Olympics is a global movement that provides year-round sports training and competitions for people with intellectual disabilities. Local torch relays and events are intended to raise awareness, build community support and celebrate inclusion for athletes and families.

The relay and the upcoming state games offer opportunities for communities and public safety agencies to show visible support for Special Olympics participants. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
