Southaven first responders run Special Olympics torch to City Hall
Southaven Police Department said in a Facebook post that officers, firefighters and emergency communications personnel took part in a Special Olympics Torch Run this morning, ending at City Hall where the Flame of Hope was passed to a county official for transport to the opening ceremonies.
The post said participants left Fire Station two and traveled west on Rasco, stopping at Greenbrook Elementary and Southaven Intermediate School to drop off goodies for children who came outside to cheer them on.
At City Hall, REM Blossom of Mississippi joined the group and the Flame of Hope was handed to Chief Deputy Muffley of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department so it could continue its journey to the Special Olympics opening ceremonies, the department said.
The Special Olympics Torch Run is a common fundraiser and awareness event in which public safety personnel carry a symbolic flame to opening ceremonies to honor athletes with intellectual disabilities and promote inclusion through sport.
Southaven is in DeSoto County, Mississippi. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
