Gulfport Police name bird Flappy Gilmore certified officer

The Gulfport Police Department said on Facebook that a local bird has become a fixture at the department sallyport and has been formally welcomed into the agency’s ranks in a tongue-in-cheek post.

The department said the bird has taken a liking to Officer Lee and that staff have named him Flappy Gilmore. The post says the bird was “officially swore[n] in as a certiflied officer,” and listed playful duties including watching traffic stops from nearby poles, leaving “tactical air strikes” on freshly washed patrol vehicles and staring at officers through glass doors like a disappointed supervisor.

The post included several humorous hashtags, underscoring the department’s use of social media for lighthearted community engagement. Municipal police agencies often use posts like this to boost morale among officers and to humanize law enforcement in the eyes of local residents.

Details about how long the bird has been visiting or whether the department plans any formal recognition were not provided. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
