Diamondhead establishes police department, swears in first chief
Twelve years after incorporating, Diamondhead established its own police department and swore in its first police chief, according to a Facebook post.
The move marks a shift in how the municipality will provide law enforcement services. Newly incorporated towns often rely on county sheriffs or state agencies for policing until they can create and fund a municipal force.
Local police departments typically handle patrols, emergency response, traffic enforcement and community policing tailored to the city’s needs. City control of a department can affect response times, local ordinances enforcement and how policing priorities are set, though building a department also requires staffing, equipment, training and administrative oversight.
The Facebook post provided limited details about the new department and its leadership, and did not list the chief’s name or plans for staffing and operations. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
