Coahoma County sheriff warns public of phone scams
COAHOMA COUNTY, Mississippi — The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook warned residents to be alert for phone scams that attempt to extort money by impersonating law enforcement or jail staff.
The office said it will never call and ask for money for unpaid fines or warrants, bail for a family member, missed jury duty or any other reason. The post said scammers often create a sense of urgency and pressure people to send money immediately.
Officials urged residents not to send money or provide financial information until they have independently verified who they are dealing with and to never rely on a phone number supplied by a caller. The sheriff’s office asked anyone who receives a suspicious call, text or message claiming to be from the sheriff’s office or the county jail to call the office directly at 662-624-3085 to confirm the information.
The sheriff’s office also asked residents to share the advisory to help protect family, friends and neighbors. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
