Alcorn County sheriff warns of phone scam targeting residents

Alcorn County officials warn residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate deputies and demand payment to avoid arrest, the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

The office said several citizens have reported receiving calls from an individual claiming to be an officer who told them they had a warrant and must pay or be arrested. The sheriff’s office said the calls are a scam and that no one from the office will call to collect money.

Authorities cautioned that the caller ID may appear to show the sheriff’s office phone number and that callers sometimes use the names of actual deputies. The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office is the county law enforcement agency that serves residents of Alcorn County in northern Mississippi.

Officials urged residents to hang up immediately, not to send money or provide personal information, and to contact the sheriff’s office directly using official channels if they have concerns.
