Booneville deploys Axon Outpost license-plate cameras at 35 sites

BOONEVILLE, Miss. — The City of Booneville and the Booneville Police Department said they will deploy the Axon Outpost automatic license plate recognition camera system at 35 locations in the coming months to enhance public safety.

In a Facebook post, the city said the fixed cameras automatically read license plates on passing vehicles, provide live-streaming video and identify vehicle attributes such as make, model and color. The post said the system is intended to help officers respond more quickly to Amber Alerts, locate stolen vehicles and wanted suspects, and support investigations.

The city said the technology will give officers real-time awareness of specific locations and help close cases faster while reducing blind spots. Officials said the system will not be used to issue traffic citations and that no mailed traffic violations will be sent based on the system. The post said the system reads license plates and does not track individual people or retain personal driving histories beyond law enforcement needs, and that data will be handled under department policies and privacy standards.

The post noted the Booneville Police Department already uses other Axon products, including tasers, body cameras and a fleet dashboard. Residents with questions were directed to contact the Booneville Police Department at 662-728-5611. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
