Pearl River County opens self-serve sandbag sites ahead of heavy rain
Pearl River County has opened multiple self-serve sandbag sites as officials prepare for heavy rainfall through Friday, the county said in a post on its Facebook page.
Locations now available for residents are: Pearl River County Operations Center, 810 Hwy. 11 South, Poplarville; Pine Grove VFD Fire Station 71, 86 Pine Grove Rd., Picayune; South East VFD Fire Station 122, 298 Salem Rd., Picayune; Nicholson VFD Fire Station 131, 1981 Hwy. 11 South, Picayune; and Carriere VFD Fire Station 111, 7414 Hwy. 11 South, Carriere.
The county said sand and sandbags are supplied at each location. Community members must bring a shovel and fill their own bags, the post said.
Sandbags are commonly used to protect homes and infrastructure from rising water by diverting or blocking runoff. Volunteer fire departments and county operations centers often serve as distribution points during flood threats because they are staffed and accessible to residents in affected areas.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
